Doppelgängers: Part 2

Due: 2017-11-25

Objective

You are to use the two characters you created as paper monsters as the subjects of a movie poster, for a hypothetical movie whose basic premise is “[Good Version] vs [Evil Version].” This shouldn’t be the name of your movie; it should be named according to your characters and their story. You will be adding dimension to these characters, but they will still be boxy.

Specs

  • 12″ x 16″ CMYK on white paper
  • Color limitations lifted
  • No photography
  • Imagery of two characters somehow clashing
  • Movie Name
  • Movie Credits: Download
Change this info so it makes sense for your movie. Look at other movie posters to get a feel for how these are typically arranged.

You do not have to use the illustrations as you adapted them to your character (they don’t have to be boxy anymore, but can be) and they do not have to be fully visible. The poster should present some sort of clash of the two character versions which makes sense with the story you have fabricated. You should show your characters with dimension but still as boxy versions. The main structure of the characters should appear boxy, but characteristics can and should extend out from the box.

  • Your characters should also be placed in an environment that adds to the effect of the poster, which could be a city scape or an abstract field of colors.
  • Use 1, 2 or 3 point perspective for the illustration, consistently
(meaning all indications of depth [not all lines] go to one of a number of vanishing points)
  • Integrate your title into the illustration, so it should be done with perspective as well.

Instructions

Sketch It

Complete at least 20 sketches of your layout so you get a good range of ideas as to how to approach your layout and the clash of the characters, and what types of perspective to use, the way to integrate your type, and the best of the these attributues. Using the best layout characteristics of your sketches, move on to the next stage.

Build It

Build your layout in Illustrator. You may use Photoshop to create some of your ambience if needed, but your type and major layout structure should be created in Illustrator. Have your major imagery and type in place by the class before the due date to receive feedback on your work.

Submission

Present a full-color printed version of the poster to the class (ready before the beginning of class) on the due date, and place a pdf with fonts embedded in the dropbox, labeled [lastname-f-doppelganger-part2].
