Magazine (Print)

Due: 2022-03-24

Objective

You are to choose a topic of interest, write and gather the content revolving around  about that topic, and create a publication that is engaging, typographically sound and consistent, and professionally presented. The minimum requires content is the following.

Content

  • Cover/Back Cover
  • Table of Contents
  • Statement of purpose
  • 3+ Long articles (2+ spreads)
  • 2+ Short articles (1 spread)
  • 2 Advertisements
  • *1 Bonus Spread

The publication should include at least 24 pages, and naturally will if you follow the guidance above. You are encouraged to add elements and features that I haven’t required above.

Design/Templates

In the process of setting up your design, you will need at least the following template/guide pages which should adjust their design accordingly:

  • Cover
  • Long Article
  • Short Article
  • Advertisement

You can (and probably should) set up your initial layouts, at full size and abiding your initial style reference sheet as appropriate, in Illustrator. Art, illustrations, and photos can be created or manipulated in other Adobe software, but the publication will be arranged using InDesign.

Tech Specs

  • You must make us of the following features of InDesign:
  • Parent pages (your design templates)
  • Paragraph Styles
  • Text wrap (for pull quotes and/or drop caps)
  • Page numbering

Process Guidance

Be specific in your choice of topic, as this will drive you to the most interesting content and result in the most interesting visual, in addition to narrowing your focus.

Add a good mix of content in your publication. Nobody wants to see the same pattern of page design over and over again. Mix up your Long and Short articles appropriately. Add in features that aren’t listed requirements, such as charts, graphs, footnotes, timelines — anything that is appropriate and engaging.

*The bonus spread is one that breaks up your magazine, and is really a big feature spread…it should break away from the structure of the rest of your magazine, but still feel like it belongs. Some examples are shown below.
